Benefits of Biochar
-
BALANCE SOIL MOISTURE
Whether you have dry sandy soil or heavy clay soil, biochar can help to stabilize it's moisture content. It does this by acting like a sponge and retaining water in sandy soil, and it's fine granular texture and porosity help to effect good drainage in heavier soil. Adequate moisture in the soil is paramount to plant growth because it enables the free exchange of nutrients from microbial life to plant roots. With the addition of biochar your soil can better maintain optimum moisture, requiring less frequent watering, and keeping your plants healthy and growing!
-
INCREASE SOIL FERTILITY
Biochar provides a home to vast numbers of beneficial soil organisms, contributing to great soil health. It is these microorganisms that decompose organic matter and interact with plant roots and fungus to cycle nutrients. It also has a high CEC (cation exchange capacity) meaning it is able to adsorb and hold nutrients that might otherwise leach away, making them available to growing plants.

IMPROVE SOIL STRUCTURE
With it's water holding capacity and it's support of soil life, biochar can help your soil transform into the perfect, balanced, loam-like texture. Biochar also helps to stimulate root exudation and therefore soil aggregation and an adequate supply of oxygen. All of this results in a softer texture which allows roots to more easily penetrate, enabling them to go deeper into the soil profile where they can access more nutrients.
